Meaningful Lessons from Quarantine Life

  • 2021 , Christine Joy D, Refrea

The pandemic has been a challenge to people all over the world. It has been a year since the COVID-19 virus broke out and we are still adapting to the new normal. Despite the struggles we faced, there are few things I realized during the quarantine and this pandemic have taught me these 10 Meaningful Lessons.

1. Maintaining Proper Hygiene

Little things such as keeping our hands clean makes a big difference from getting the virus. In addition to that, we make ourselves more presentable to people with the impression of being clean and well-groomed. This doesn’t limit us by being clean in our body but also in our environment as well. The reason we must always change our masks, wash our clothes, and taking a bath whenever we go home is to also consider our family at home. They are also at risk if we contaminate our own household from not keeping a proper hygiene.

2. Explored New Hobbies

During the qurantine, the time passed slower than I expected since there aren’t many things to do at home. So i tried to look for hobbies that can make my free time more significant. I learnt how to paint, I tried to cook Korean dishes, and I make time to take care of our plants at home. These are just the few things that make me occupied during the quarantine and it felt nice that I get to mazimize my time doing interesting habits.

3. Valuing our time with our Family

I have realized during this time that spending our days with our family during these difficult challenge will make us more stronger. At times during quarantine, we have our bond through playing indoor activities such as badminton and volleyball. We also excercised together to make our body active and physically strong.

4. Catching up with our friends online

We must enjoy the company of our friends while they are still there. It has been a year since we last hangout together in our favorite spot near school. If I only knew that it’s gonna be our last time to hangout together we must have enjoy the moments. Being quarantined in our home just make us more connected and open towards each other with the help of technology.

5. Became mindful of my proper diet

Being at home really made me lazy and inactive physically that is why I gained weight in the first few months of quarantine. So in order for me to keep in shape, I monitored my meals everyday. I cut down junk foods and carbonated drinks that will just trigger my acidity.

6. Being grateful for the good things

I developed a habit whenever I feel mad at certain things. I usually write on a notepad about few things I’m grateful for that day, starting from thanking God on waking me up without any sickness. Being grateful on things makes it more easier for me to appreciate the small things rather than giving my focus on the bad things happened on that moment.

7. Reconnecting with yourself

This is one of my biggest hardship during the quarantine and up until now, I’m still trying to developed a better relationship with myself. I believe many people have also tried to create their self-care routine during the quarantine, and I realized that this is the time we should thank ourselves too for reaching this far despite the challenges we have faced in our life. Knowing that we aren’t alone in our hardships, we can always have our family and friends to support us.

8. Spreading Kindness regardless of their social status

Many Filipinos have been affected by the quarantine. I have read many stories of our fellowmen struggling to keep a living for their family, and I realized that we should really give back our blessings even just throught the smallest way possible and that is to repay kindness.

9. Celebrate small victories in your life

This is co-related in being grateful during this pandemic. We must also see the small achievements we are trying to make just like adapting a new hobby, accomplishing a task like general-cleaning in our house. This helps me to accomplish more futuristic goals I have set in my mind, which also gives me many different thrilling ideas to try.

10. Embrace the change

I have struggled to adapt the new normal lifestyle, but since it would be more difficult to accept this new lifestyle, I have no other option but to consider this change. Aside from that, there are more things to learn with the new setup of socializing outside with all the changes in the new normal.

In conclusion, we are still new to this quarantine situation we are still in, but we must still take this opportunity to find great things to be grateful and take this challenge to reconnect with the most important people we have. Averting our focus from the online world to fixing our relationships with our social circle. As we do not know how long they will be there in this world. Kindness will always prevail at these difficult challenges.

If I could create a change in my country, What would it be?

There are a lot of things that should be changed about the Philippines. There should be love, fairness and justice. There should be education, housing, healthcare for all. There should be better treatment of poor people. There should be more openness towards ideas that conflict our own. We should end global warming, crime, war, racism, terrorism, corruption, pollution, poverty, climate change and more. Those are all things that many people would change about the Philippines, but I want everyone to think bigger. Why are there so many problems in our country today? One word: avaricious person.

The greedy bring ruin to their households, but the one who hate bribes will live.

PROVERBS 15:27

If I could change one thing about my country, I would eradicate human greed. Greediness inside of human’s heart is the core of our country’s biggest problems. Greed is like a newborn seed that grows into a poisonous vine, in the long run dominating the human soul like an contagious disease, spreading to every corner of society. Eventually, dimming us from the light of truth.

We refused to see the consequence of pollution. Our greed blinded us from this reality. Global warming exists because of our greed. We were greedy and desire more things so we built more factories. We saw coal as the cheapeast and effective source of energy, therefore our factories started using coal which generate pollution. Pollution in turn causes global warming. The same goes for crime, war, and terrorism. Leaders of our country are greedy and desire more for their own, from that greed arises crime, war and terrorism. Instead of being greedy, we should spread love and be more kind and caring towards our fellow countrymen. Wait, but isn’t it human nature to be greedy? Yes. We are all greedy and that is a portion of us human that might not at all can’t transform but the conflict is that in our perspective, being greedy is normal and good when in fact, greed is anything but good.

Mahatma Gandhi’s famous quote expresses that there are sufficient resources to meet human needs, but not sufficient enough to meet human greed, was never more true. Throughout the world, in their pursuit for money, political leaders have wrecked up the financial system, ruin the value of money, which is the foundation of a capitalist society, and produce countless conflicts which have displaced millions and generate hatred. Some things must change.

Greed is at the mean of most of our country’s biggest problems like global warming, corruption, injustice and poverty. That is why I urge all of you this very day to reconsider your perception of greed. Greed is not a good thing. You know what is? Being kind, loving and caring about others. When you extend kindness, people tend to want to be in a relationship with you. Relationships are like your comfort food, when you feel sad they give light to your heavy heart. We all should love our neighbor other than ourselves for in the book of Mathew, Lord said, “Love your neighbor as yourself”. So, let us all create more relationships with others, lets make someone else’s day better instead of focusing on ourselves.

SOUL SURFING

SIARGAO ISLAND, PHILIPPINES

Surfing is a lifestyle, full stop. It isn’t like tennis, badminton, or volleyball. If there are waves, I almost run out of the resort, getting into my favorite swimwear.

This sport is special to me in a way that almost no other sports can compare with. It engage me in an activity where I totally connected with the elements- the sea engulfs us and I at once is 99% water inside and 100% sorrounded by water outside. I am in a physically neutral state of balance, and internally mentally bouyant.

SURFING IS LIKE A LIFESTYLE, AN ADDICTION, AND A HEALTHY OUTDOOR ACTIVITY.

It feels like you have harnessed the power and are enjoying it, feels like you forget everything else in the world except the waves and you. Surfing feels like you have a free ride to get more closer to nature.

I adapt the energy of the entire ocean to my pleasure, I sit in under the sun or rain, indifferent to the weather, I return to the land afterwards, feeling both that I am back where I belong but also like I am somehow incomplete, having left a part of myself back out in the ocean.

As a surfer, you will, almost without a doubt, be one of those few lucky people who have at least realized what a surfboard is for. At whatever level you surf, you will have experienced moments of freedom. The sound of the ocean waves is very therapeutic, it calms my soul and provided me somehow a peace of mind.

The thing is, once you have the taste of this feeling, theres no reason to believe that we can only experience it in water, on a surfboard. There is no need to think about anything else. There is no need to polish the board or to put it in a case to enjoy surfing, because all you really need is the willingness to surf.

Back when we’re all a child one the first few essential thing that was taught to us is how to walk on land, and having the confidence to stand on a piece of wood and be with the ocean is priceless.

Surfing is also a form of execise it can help your body to stay fit and healthy, since surfing will require body coordination. There’s always a first time to everything, allow yourself to be a beginner. You may see surfing hard at first, the bruises from bumping your body on the surfing board and the water will all be worth it on the end.

Like what Moana, a disney princess said “If I go, there is just no telling how far I will go”. Chasing your dream is like surfing, full of fear and excitement but the journey and the ocean waves that you will face in life is just an obstacle for you to reach your dream, use this obstacle as a strength.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus your own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
